A guide to septic tank risers

Septic tank risers help make the access to your underground tank much easier by giving easier entry for maintenance and sewage removal.

What is a septic tank riser?

As most septic tank problems can occur because the system is below the ground level, a septic tank riser is a pipe that joins the underground tank with the surface. It runs from the tank’s pump out opening and the lid makes it easy for experts to inspect for septic tank problems without the need to dig up the ground around the tank. They can be made from plastic or concrete and once installed will ensure your yard will never be dug up again. The lids are tight to avoid any smells or gases being released and septic tank risers can withstand more than a tonne of weight. Most new systems come with risers already built in but many older houses do not have them and they can be installed during a routine service. Here is everything you need to know about septic tank servicing.

Do I need a septic tank riser?

Most septic system manufacturers suggest pumping out the system at regular intervals. In a domestic system, the size of the tank and levels of solids will determine how often that is. It may be every few years or more frequent. In a commercial setting that may be more often like every few months. With many older systems being installed underground, this can mean having to dig up your yard to find the tank and pump out. With septic tank risers, these issues are avoided because access can be gained from the ground level.

How much do septic tank risers cost?

The actual components can be quite cost effective at just a few hundred dollars with the plastic varieties. Concrete risers are more durable but also cost a little more. Just be sure to get a quote for the job to make sure the installation is detailed as there may actually be quite a bit of digging involved so labour costs may be a little more than anticipated. But it saves you in the long run because it avoids any future digging because the tank can be accessed more easily. It can also save you money in the long run by forcing you to check the health of your current system and avoid future hidden problems.

Septic tank problems

A lot of septic tank problems stem from poor plumbing inside your home or business. Leaky taps, running toilets and cracked pipes can cause a huge water build up within your system that can result in sewage leaking into the surrounding environment. There are also a number of general household items that can cause septic tank problems. Sanitary items, fats, oils, chemicals, nappies, wipes, cigarette butts and coffee grounds should never enter your sewage system because they can cause blockages. Here are some of the most common septic tank problems.
